Dont carve the whole thing Instead of cutting the whole thing just cut some around it, making it seem like the pumpkin has teeth!

Don't use JUST a pumpkin Instead of the usuall round pumpkins, use a squash! there are all kinds of pumpkin like things you can use to make cool carvings.

Make it a picture This might be hard, but try carving a painting on your pumpkin instead of a face, Its more eye-catching if it's good and you'll feel really proud once it's done.
